U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry has made inexplicable statement on Friday.
He said that refrigerators and air conditioners pose as much of a threat to human lives as ISIS terrorists. John Kerry made the statement at a Vienna conference he was attending for the purpose of making amendments to the 1987 Montreal Protocol.
The Montreal Protocol was implemented as an agreement among world powers to limit the use of chemicals that deplete and/or damage the ozone layer. The goal of John Kerry’s proposed changes to the agreement includes phasing out HFCs. HFCs (or hydrofluorocarbons) are utilized in many of the most common household appliances, including fridges and air conditioning units, reports Fox News.
According to John Kerry, changes to the Montreal Protocol are necessary due to the current trend of global climate change, something that many scientists believe human technology is contributing to. Kerry says that HFCs are as dangerous as ISIS because the chemicals, used in coolants, have accelerated the trend of global climate change, which has the potential to impact (or even wipe out) every life on the planet.
“As we were working together on the challenge of [ISIS] and terrorism. It’s hard for some people to grasp it, but what we–you–are doing here right now is of equal importance because it has the ability to literally save life on the planet itself.”
According to John Kerry, because of the banning of many of the Montreal Protocol-listed substances, the worldwide use of HFCs has grown. Kerry added that HFCs are “thousands of times more potent than CO2,” the most commonly-referred to substance when discussing global warming and/or climate change.
While Secretary of State John Kerry praised the nations involved in the Montreal Protocol for “meeting their obligations” and doing their collective and individual parts to ban ozone-damaging products, he went on to say that it’s not enough. Even though the hole in the ozone layer that prompted the Montreal Protocol has shrunk significantly since the bans were implemented, Kerry wants developed nations to do more to protect the entire environment.
Not just the ozone layer,
